Why aren’t architectures in Montreal pushed to the extreme?

Question: Patrice, why aren’t architectures in Montreal pushed to the extreme, like banana shaped buildings perhaps?

Answer: It’s very simple. Money! Did I just make my dollar sign the wrong way? Money. Look, the only reason why Abu Dhabi has completely out of this world architectures, is money. It’s as simple as that. It’s very expensive to build advanced architectures. Here, the architects do their utmost to stay in the price range of the mass. It’s as simple as that. If the architects had more of budget, we also would have extraordinary architectures. But we need buildings, and to have a more maximized building, a more financially lucrative one, it always comes down to rectangular, square shaped, classical buildings. I still find that architects are doing a great job in Montreal bringing these classical architectures to a very respectable modern level. However, give us a budget of $ 1,000 dollars per square foot tomorrow morning, you’ll have exceptional towers as well. The best architects in the world who come to Montreal are limited by the same constraints, namely urban planning constraints. In most areas, they are limited in types of color they can use, the types of materials that will be used, and even shapes. Therefore, these architects very often present eccentric ideas that are brought down to earth, and eventually make them become expert council members. The UPC, called the urban planning committee that unfortunately limits the architects’ ideas of grandeur.
